Tottenham monitor Mbaye as Aston Villa push hardest for PSG winger

Tottenham Hotspur are watching the situation around PSG winger Mbaye, but the current picture is fairly straightforward. Aston Villa appear further down the road.

According to Sports View, the 18-year-old “has expressed a desire to leave the French capital in search of a new challenge”, even though “his inner circle favouring a different path” would rather see him stay and continue his development in Paris. That matters, because when a player wants out, even a long contract can start to look less decisive than it appears on paper.

Mbaye, described as a “very dynamic” winger, is under contract until 2028, so PSG hold the leverage. Even so, personal pressure changes negotiations. The report adds that his “eye is firmly fixed on a potential move abroad”, and that is why Premier League clubs are circling.

Villa move looks more advanced

This is where Spurs supporters need to be realistic. Villa “remain heavily interested in securing the signature” and have been tracking him “aggressively”. More importantly, their recruitment team are said to be “positioning themselves at the front of the queue”. That is not the language of a casual check-in. That is a club preparing to act.

By contrast, Tottenham “are also attentive to the unfolding situation”, but their interest is “less pronounced than Villa’s”. In plain terms, Spurs like the player, but they are not driving this race right now.

PSG winger fits long-term Premier League profile

There is an obvious appeal here. Mbaye boosted his standing on international duty, where he scored for Senegal against France in the group stage of the World Cup. Add that to the reality that there is a traffic jam ahead of him in Paris, and the final line of the report sums it up neatly, “it is no surprise he wants to leave.”

For Tottenham, this feels like a monitoring brief rather than a live operation. That can change quickly in the transfer market, but if Spurs want the PSG winger, they may soon need to do more than just keep tabs.

Our View

From a Spurs fan perspective, this is exactly the sort of report that gets people talking. Young, talented, fearless, wants a new challenge, and plays in a position where pace and one-v-one ability can change games. Of course supporters will be interested.

At the same time, there is no point pretending Spurs are leading this one when the report clearly says Villa are stronger at the moment. Fine. Then the question becomes simple, do Tottenham rate Mbaye enough to move properly, or are they just gathering information while they prioritise other targets?

If the recruitment team believe he can become a serious Premier League attacker, Spurs should not hang around. This is the kind of signing fans can get behind because the upside is obvious. He is 18, already a Senegal international, and has shown he can produce on a bigger stage. You do not get many chances at that profile before the price climbs sharply.

There is also a wider point. Tottenham need more speed, more unpredictability and more players who can attack defenders without hesitation. A “very dynamic” winger ticks plenty of boxes. No one is saying he walks in and transforms the side overnight, but these are the bets smart clubs make before a player fully explodes. If Villa are truly at the front, Spurs need to decide whether they are serious, because hovering in the background achieves nothing.
