ESPN college football list highlights several all-time Florida greats

Florida high school football has produced some of the most dominant players in the history of the sport.

From small-town stadium lights to national championship pressure, these players first built their legends on Florida soil, where Friday nights often felt like a preview of college level play.

ESPN has named all these players on their Top 100 players according to their jersey numbers.

This group represents some of the most explosive, versatile and dominating athletes ever to come through the state. Whether it was game-breaking speed, defensive intensity, or pure star power, each of these players separated themselves early. Before the Heismans, Pro Bowls and Hall of Fame careers, it all started here in Florida.

#21 Deion Sanders | North Fort Myers High School

Sanders starred in football, basketball, and baseball. In football, he earned All-South Independent and All-American honors, became an NCAA punt return yards leader, and was a unanimous All-American at Florida State. His standout high school career helped launch his path to stardom in college and the NFL.

#15 Tim Tebow | Nease High School

Tebow became one of the state’s most accomplished quarterbacks in high school. He led Nease to the 2005 Florida 4A state championship, set a title-game touchdown record, earned All-State honors, won Florida Mr. Football and was named a Parade All-American. He went on to a legendary career at Florida where he won the Heisman Trophy.

#46 Khalil Mack | Westwood High School

Mack switched from quarterback to linebacker and quickly became a defensive standout. He served as team captain, earned All-State and All-Area honors, recorded 110 tackles and four sacks, and led Westwood to a district championship before committing to Buffalo and eventually becoming an All-Pro in the NFL.

#47 Michael Irvin | St. Thomas Aquinas High School

Irvin transferred to St. Thomas from Piper High School. At STA, he helped lead the program to a state championship, earned All-State honors, and became a highly recruited receiver. His dominant play made him one of Florida’s most impactful high school football talents.

#52 Ray Lewis | Kathleen High School (Lakeland, FL)

Lewis became one of the nation’s top high school linebackers in high school. He was a two-time MVP, earned All-American recognition, and built a reputation for intense, dominant defensive play. His standout high school career led to a scholarship at Miami, and later as an all-time great with the Baltimore Ravens.

#76 Warren Sapp | Apopka High School (Apopka, FL)

Sapp was a versatile standout linebacker, tight end and punter in high school. He helped lead his team to a strong junior season and earned All-State honors as a senior. Sapp recorded dominant defensive stats, contributed on offense, and set multiple school records, showcasing elite all-around ability. He moved to defensive lineman at Miami, where he etched his name among the greats of the game’s history.
