’Always Been 2 Steps Ahead of Everybody Else’ — NFL Legend Claims LeBron James ’Already Knows’ His Next Team

LeBron James shocked the NBA after officially notifying the Los Angeles Lakers that he would not return for a ninth season. Though several teams have been linked as the potential landing spots for the future Hall of Famer, NFL legend Chad Johnson believes the entire situation is merely a publicity stunt.
Why Chad Johnson Isn’t Buying the LeBron James Free Agency Buzz
According to James’ agent, Rich Paul, the former Lakers superstar is focused on finding the right basketball situation and personal happiness rather than maximizing his salary.
Paul has also indicated that around 10 to 12 teams have expressed interest in the 41-year-old.
However, veteran NBA analyst Ric Bucher questioned that narrative during a recent episode of the On the Ball podcast.
Bucher said that the idea of Paul contacting teams across the league to gauge interest is more about shaping the public narrative than reflecting reality. According to Bucher, if franchises truly wanted the four-time champion, they would already be making their interest known without needing outreach from James’ camp.

While Bucher believes the situation reflects James and Paul’s adjustment to a changing market, Johnson sees it differently.
In the latest episode of the “Nightcap” podcast, Johnson said he believes James has already decided on his next destination despite the ongoing speculation.
“The funny thing about it is that they are playing chess,” Johnson said. “They already know where you’re going. They’ve always been two steps ahead of everybody else.”
“They know exactly what they want. Are they gonna say it? No. They’re gonna play the game the way the game is supposed to be played and have everyone else on eggshells, wondering and talking and creating conversations about what it’s gonna be.”
James continued to perform at an elite level last season, averaging 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds per game. He embraced a smaller offensive role behind Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves while still delivering All-Star-caliber production, making him one of the most attractive free agents on the market.
Among the teams most closely linked to James, the Golden State Warriors have reportedly been the most aggressive. A move to the Golden State would let him team up with Stephen Curry to pursue another championship.
A return to the Cleveland Cavaliers has also remained a popular possibility. Ending his career with the franchise where it began carries a strong emotional appeal, and league insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer recently reported that Cleveland could even explore acquiring James’ son, Bronny James, as part of an effort to bring the four-time MVP back.
The Philadelphia 76ers have also become a potential landing spot after making a blockbuster trade for Jaylen Brown. A partnership between Brown and James would immediately create one of the league’s most formidable duos.
Other franchises that continue to be mentioned as possible destinations include the Miami Heat, Denver Nuggets, and Minnesota Timberwolves, among several others.
