Yankees MLB trade deadline plans have to change after top prospect lands on injured list

The New York Yankees entered the 2026 season with one goal in mind: win the World Series. Even after dropping seven straight games, they remain one of the American League’s top teams and are widely expected to be aggressive buyers ahead of next month’s MLB trade deadline. But a new injury may have significantly altered how general manager Brian Cashman approaches the deadline.
According to Yankees insider Bryan Hoch, top pitching prospect Carlos Lagrange has been placed on the injured list with a shoulder injury, eliminating what many believed would be an in-house solution for the Yankees’ bullpen.

A Huge Blow to the Bullpen Plan
For months, the Yankees appeared to have a clear vision for Lagrange. The organization transitioned the hard-throwing prospect from the starting rotation to the bullpen in the minor leagues with the expectation that he would make his major league debut this summer in a high-leverage relief role.
The move couldn’t have gone much better. Lagrange excelled after moving to the bullpen, giving the Yankees confidence that he could provide an immediate boost during the second half of the season. Now, those plans are on hold.
New York Needs Outside Help
Bullpen depth was already one of the Yankees’ concerns entering the trade deadline, but the bigger concern for the club was the lack of offense they have gotten from their catchers. While adding a catcher is still important, adding relief pitching has become an even greater priority now that Lagrange’s availability is in question.
Shoulder injuries are notoriously difficult to predict, and counting on the young right-hander to contribute this season would be a risky gamble. Instead, the Yankees should shift their focus toward proven major league relievers.
Time to Be Aggressive
Championship windows don’t stay open forever, and the Yankees have one of the deepest rosters in baseball despite their recent struggles. With Aaron Judge expected to return later this season and several other injured players nearing a comeback, New York still has all the ingredients to make another deep postseason run.
However, the bullpen cannot be overlooked. Rather than relying on an injured prospect to solve one of their biggest weaknesses, the Yankees should pursue multiple relief pitchers before the deadline. If they truly believe this roster is capable of winning the World Series, reinforcing the bullpen should become one of the front office’s top priorities over the next month.
