Should Anthony Gordon start ahead of Marcus Rashford for England against Mexico?

Anthony Gordon versus Marcus Rashford. They’re on the same team, but they are being compared every week. It’s the subplot that’s got FC Barcelona fans and England fans both wondering – who will start next? Who will play best? And how will they perform this club season?
Rashford recently returned to Manchester United after his loan spell with Barcelona officially ended. Not physically, of course, as he was with England’s expedition for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. But the Catalans turned down the chance to sign him permanently using the purchase clause in the original agreement.
Barça have already signed Gordon from Newcastle United as his replacement. Rashford did not disappoint wearing blaugrana – he won La Liga and contributed goals and assists. However, his salary was a stumbling block. Gordon would take less money in salary (though the transfer fee was higher) and, it’s hoped, will perform at least as well, if not better.
For England, Gordon was the starter at first, until Rashford was given the job. Pundits said Rashford became the starter because his performances were stronger. That changed in England’s come-from-behind win over DR Congo, where Gordon came off the bench and gave two assists.
Now, manager Thomas Tuchel has a decision to make again. Will he persist with Rashford, or will he reward Gordon’s involvement in their win by giving him a start in the next round of the World Cup?
Either way, both are sure to play a part in a supremely important duel against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
