Former Texas A&M linebacker Keith Mitchell dies at 51

Former Texas A&M linebacker Keith Mitchell, a cornerstone of the famed Wrecking Crew defense and one of the most productive pass rushers in program history, has passed away at the age of 51.
Mitchell starred for the Aggies from 1993–96, emerging as one of the most feared edge defenders in college football. Across his final two seasons, he terrorized opposing quarterbacks, finishing his senior year with 14.5 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss. His dominant play earned him All-American honors from The Sporting News and College Football News, along with *MVP recognition in the Aggies’ Alamo Bowl victory.
Despite his production, Mitchell went undrafted in 1997 but quickly proved he belonged at the next level. He signed with the New Orleans Saints, where he spent five of his seven NFL seasons. His breakout year came in 2000, when he recorded 85 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and an interception returned for a touchdown, earning a Pro Bowl selection and cementing his place as one of the league’s top linebackers that season.
Mitchell’s family released a statement through Travis Brown of KBTX, expressing gratitude for the support they’ve received during this difficult time. A portion of the statement reads:
“On behalf of our entire family, we want to express our deepest gratitude for the overwhelming love, prayers, and support that have surrounded Keith during this incredibly difficult time.
“Your messages, encouragement, and kindness have meant more to us than words can express.
“We are profoundly grateful for every prayer lifted, every thoughtful message shared, and every act of compassion shown to our family.
Mitchell leaves behind a legacy defined by relentless effort, quiet leadership, and a career that inspired generations of Aggies and Saints fans alike.
