Blue-chip 2028 quarterback decommits from Notre Dame

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are once again looking for a quarterback in their 2028 recruiting class.

They thought they filled the hole when Trey Tagliaferri committed to them on June 25, but that commitment lasted less than a week, with the four-star prospect decommitting on Wednesday. He originally picked Notre Dame over the Oklahoma Sooners and Penn State Nittany Lions, who will both likely factor into his recruitment again.

Tagliaferri is ranked as the No. 216 overall player and No. 13 quarterback in the Rivals industry ranking. The Colts Bech product is also the No. 9 player from New Jersey.

He had an excellent sophomore season at Bergen Catholic High School, his first as the starter. He completed 62.1% of his passes for 2,215 yards and 29 touchdowns to three interceptions.

He was Notre Dame’s highest-rated commit in the 2028 cycle, but they still have commitments from four-star safety Andre Jones and kicker Owen Davies, as they have gotten a solid early jump on their class. While losing out on Tagliaferri stings, they have plenty of time to replace him and have had plenty of success recruiting the position under Marcus Freeman.
