Amateur baseball roundup for June 30: Pheasants topple Mustangs in Sunshine matchup

Jul. 1—WINNER, S.D. — Winner/Colome used an eight-run eighth inning to rally past Mount Vernon 15-8 in a Sunshine League amateur baseball game Tuesday at Leahy Bowl.
The Pheasants finished with a 16-6 edge in hits and rallied from a 8-6 deficit after six innings, with one run in the seventh and eight runs in the eighth inning. Drew DeMers and Austin Richey both had four hits for W/C, with Richey driving in three runs. Dillon Lambley drove in four runs for the Pheasants and Landon Calhoon had two hits, two stolen bases and scored three times. Austin Calhoon also had three hits and three runs scored.
Landon Calhoon started on the mound and threw 4 2/3 innings and struck out nine Mount Vernon batters, while allowing four hits, eight runs (two earned) and walked seven. Isaiah Olson was the winning pitcher for the Pheasants out of the bullpen, allowing two hits and no runs in 4 1/3 innings and struck out six.
For Mount Vernon, Parker Mandel had two hits and three RBIs and Deric Denning added two hits. Bradley Dean started on the mound with seven innings pitched, 11 hits and seven earned runs for the Mustangs. Mandel was the losing pitcher, allowing four hits, eight runs (seven earned) and recorded one out in relief.
Winner/Colome (7-4, 7-4 Sunshine) will play next at the Parkston Rays at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 9. Mount Vernon (3-10, 2-9 Sunshine) will host the Parkston Rays in its next game at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7.

Canova, Dell Rapids Mudcats split makeup doubleheader: Two of the top teams in the Cornbelt League finished with a split on Tuesday night, with Canova winning a makeup game from May by a score of 11-5 before the Mudcats responded with a 10-5, seven-inning win in the regularly scheduled home game.
The first game was a continuation from May 17, picked up in the top of the sixth inning with Canova leading 5-3. Jared “Little” Miller threw 3 2/3 innings after the rainout and struck out five batters and allowed two unearned runs for the save, while Luke Koepsell stood as the winning pitcher with 5 1/3 innings, four hits and three runs (one earned) allowed, striking out eight. Riley Genzlinger and Justin Miller both had two RBIs and Jack Neises and Jackson Remmers had two hits each.
In Game 2, Dell Rapids built a 7-2 lead in the first three innings and outhit Canova 12-7 on the way to a 10-5 win. Carter Gullickson had a double and triple with three RBIs and Austin Henry and Ty Hoglund both had two RBIs. Henry was the winning pitcher with five innings pitched, five hits, two earned runs and seven strikeouts. Kendall Gassman had a solo home run for Canova, while Justin Miller had two hits and two RBIs. Jack Neises was charged with the loss for the Gang, allowing five hits and five runs in an inning.
Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks 8, Salem 6 in Humboldt: Salem scored the first four runs of the game but the Wood Ducks had final say in a Cornbelt League win on Tuesday. Curtis Flint had two home runs and drove in three runs for the Wood Ducks and Camden McDonald and Brayden Odegaard each had two hits. Salem’s Dexter Payne had a two-run home run and a four RBI game and Bobby Koepsell hit a solo home run. Tyler Earls took the loss, throwing eight innings with 11 hits and eight runs allowed, striking out six.

Dimock/Emery 5, Platte 3 in Platte: Josh Engquist threw 6 2/3 innings of relief and 10 strikeouts to power the Raptors to a Sunshine League win. Engquist gave up two hits and two runs in relief of Hunter Robinson, who threw 2 1/3 innings and allowed three hits and a run. Dane Toman had two hits and an RBI and Drew Kitchens scored three times, while Lincoln Bates and Landon Waddell both drove in runs for D/E. Hunter Hewitt had a home run and drove in two for the Killer Tomatoes, which had two runs and two stolen bases from Matt Link, who took the loss in 4 1/3 innings on the mound with four hits and three runs allowed. Platte used six pitchers who combined for 10 walks and 12 strikeouts.
