Oregon baseball loses assistant coach to SEC

The Oregon Ducks baseball program continues to take a hit this offseason. While star players have left in the transfer portal for opportunities within the SEC, members of the coaching staff are not far behind.

Oregon hitting coach Jack Marder is leaving the program to join the Texas Longhorns as a recruiting coordinator, according to D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers. Marder spent seven seasons on the Ducks’ coaching staff under Mark Wasikowski. He also played for the Ducks in 2010 and 2011.

Marder was a massive part of Oregon’s recruiting success in recent years, helping the program to reach the Super Regional round three times in the past four years. Although the Ducks have seen some of their top offensive talents leave the program this offseason, they have also sent several players to the next level, thanks to Marder’s recruiting and development.

Texas took down Oregon in the Austin Super Regional a few weeks ago, and now the Longhorns are prying the Eugene staple away from where his baseball journey began. After playing for the Ducks and reaching as high as Double-A in his professional career, Marder spent two seasons coaching at Stanford before returning to Oregon in 2020.

Marder even assumed head coaching duties for the Ducks this season in the regular-season finale against USC while Wasikowski was away. The Ducks beat the Trojans in a 14-inning thriller to secure their spot in the conference tournament.

The Ducks have built their roster in recent seasons almost entirely from recruiting, so the program will have to do plenty of soul-searching this offseason to find a new way to stack the roster with talent. Oregon will still have the chance to add through the transfer portal, but the Ducks will have to prove they can find another way to identify talent for the future.
