Austria and Algeria drew up one of the craziest finishes in World Cup history.

Fox announcer JP Dellacamera, if you read all the takes on social media, didn’t live up to the moment.

Both teams were set to advance to the knockout rounds with a draw, and it was tied 2-2 when it reached the 90th minute, just stoppage time still to play.

But then Riyad Mahrez scored in the third minute of stoppage time — which would send just Algeria through and send Austria home.

Somehow, Austria equalized in the final moments of the match.

Dellacamera’s call was quite muted:

Kyle Bonn of The Sporting News agreed, posting this on X:

“He’s been washed ever since he got the goal scorer wrong on Charlotte FC’s first-ever goal in club history. His vocabulary has evaporated, he feels distracted at times, his cadence is completely off, and he doesn’t seem to capture the moments properly at all.”

Dellacamera is certainly a key figure in the history of soccer announcing in the United States.

Play-by-play announcers often stick around even when some have begun to question whether they’re still up to the task, and it’s fair for the networks to continue to provide Dellacamera an opportunity.

But when the World Cup absolutely lost its mind on Saturday night, Dellacamera didn’t lose his. Some will probably appreciate that, but some were definitely hoping for more.
