CFL closes door to Brendan Sorsby

Quarterback Brendan Sorsby has another obstacle in the way of him playing football in 2026. The latest is that the Canadian Football League will not allow him to sign with a team this year, according to USA TODAY.

“Upholding the integrity of the league and ensuring fair competition are paramount to the CFL. The allegations involving Brendan Sorsby are serious and concerning,” said the league in a statement to USA TODAY. “At this time, the CFL will not register a contract for him, and no team will be permitted to add him to its negotiation list.”

Sorsby lost eligibility with the NCAA after he admitted to betting on college sports, including many bets on his Indiana team when he played there. He entered rehab for treatment after he transferred to Texas Tech, but then lost eligibility. He took the case to court and received a temporary injunction, restoring his eligibility temporarily, but he withdrew the suit when he decided to apply for the NFL supplemental draft, designed to give athletes a path to the NFL who had lost their eligibilty.

The NFL denied his application, saying there will be no supplemental draft, and that Sorsby would be eligible for the 2027 NFL draft and could not sign with a team until after the draft.

His legal team intends on fighting the decision, but Sorsby lost both the opportunity to play college football and in the NFL. Now the CFL is saying no, although it was never known whether Sorsby intended on going that route.

Options for 2026 are limited. He could perhaps try and play in the NAIA or at a junior college, but with the gambling issue following him, he might not be welcome there.

With things now how they appear, Sorsby will not be able to play football in 2026 and that probably will make him undraftable in 2027. The first-round talent will now have to go the route of many undrafted guys.

The Arizona Cardinals, who had some reported interest in Sorsby, probably will look elsewhere in 2027. Either Carson Beck, their third-round pick this year, will show enough promise to be their future, or they, if the 2026 season is as bad as expected, will have a top pick in the draft to get one of the top prospects who played the 2026 season.
