Bullpen help continues to be a priority for the New York Yankees heading into the Major League Baseball trade deadline, though the Yankees will have to get creative and figure out what they want to do.

Going after expensive relievers isn’t the worst idea, but the Yankees might believe that they can find cheaper options and go that route.

As we’ve seen in the past, the Yankees have one of the best pitching labs in Major League Baseball, so going after a guy with above-average analytical stuff who is much cheaper than, say, Josh Hader wouldn’t be the worst idea. Regarding Hader, however, there’s definitely a sense that the Yankees could be interested.

According to the latest, because of his contract and his age, there’s a chance that Hader doesn’t go for as much as some are thinking if the Houston Astros decide to move on from him.

“Hader’s looked just fine after missing the first two months of the season with left bicep tendinitis. Were he an impending free agent, he’d easily be one of the most sought after arms in the sport.

“However, he still has two years and $38 million left on his contract after this year, and he’ll turn 33 next April. That will likely suppress the return for a lights-out closer,” Tim Britton of The Athletic wrote.

I understand the idea here from Britton, and don’t necessarily think it’s wrong.

However, I do question whether the Yankees would actually be willing to meet that price there, as I suspect that it will still be much higher than the typical reliever who goes for a fringe top-20 prospect or two.
