There has been widespread speculation that the Boston Celtics could be looking to deal Jaylen Brown for Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo as part of a trade package.
Over the last few weeks, many NBA analysts have thought the Bucks would flip Brown to a third team to acquire more draft capital and young assets for their rebuild, but that might not be the case.
ESPN’s NBA Insider Shams Charania reported on Monday that the Bucks are willing to keep Brown.
“If the Milwaukee Bucks go with the Boston Celtics’ offer, Jaylen Brown will be in Milwaukee,” Charania said on “Get Up”, via MassLive’sSouichi Terada. “That’s all I’ll say.”
Keeping Brown makes more sense for the Bucks than trading him. He still has three years left on his contract before he can become a free agent. The Bucks won’t have to move on from him, as Brown doesn’t have any options to leave until the 2029 offseason.
The Bucks do not control their own draft pick until the 2031 draft. It wouldn’t make sense for the Bucks to tank because even if they perform poorly, they don’t have a guaranteed path to securing a top pick.
The Bucks should consider keeping Brown and focus on competing in a weak Eastern Conference. Brown remains one of the NBA’s top players. While he may not be as good as Antetokounmpo, he demonstrated this past season that he can lead a team to the playoffs as the No. 1 option.
Milwaukee doesn’t have a roster as talented as the Celtics’ last season, but it does hold the No. 10 pick in this year’s draft and could bring home a star player to pair with Brown.
