Serena Williams returns to Wimbledon singles via wild card invite

Serena Williams is returning to Grand Slam tennis for a solo dance on the lush green courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

Williams, a 23-time major champion, will compete at Wimbledon in singles after accepting a wild-card invitation according to the All England Club.

The 44-year-old tennis legend recently made her competitive return in doubles after nearly four years away from the professional circuit.

Williams will also play doubles at Wimbledon with her older sister, Venus, after previously accepting a separate wild-card invitation.

A wild card invitation is handed out by tournament officials and allow ex-champions and select players to feature in the main draw without the usual qualifications. Wimbledon reportedly held its final singles wild-card invitation open in the hopes that Williams would play.
