Could the Nets pursue Hornets' Coby White in NBA free-agency?

The Brooklyn Nets are in the middle of an offseason in which they hope to improve the team as much as possible after finishing the 2025-26 season with a 20-62 record. Brooklyn is projected to be one of just a few teams in the league with significant cap space and if they’re pursuing outside free-agents, could they look to someone like Charlotte Hornets guard Coby White?
“In addition, it’s worth noting that the Nets have expressed interest in Hornets free agent guard Coby White in the past when he was on the Chicago Bulls, sources said,” HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto wrote on White in connection to the Nets. White will be an unrestricted free-agent this summer so there is a possibility that he could be heading elsewhere, including a team like Brooklyn.
“While the Nets have the necessary cap space to pursue White and other players outright, could both teams discuss a sign-and-trade deal involving the two players if Brooklyn uses its cap space on other players,” Scotto continued. “Hornets president Jeff Peterson worked in Brooklyn with Nets general manager and alternate governor Sean Marks.”
White, 26, is coming off a down season by his recently-established standards, but he also split the season between the Chicago Bulls and Hornets after being traded near the February deadline. With that being said, White averaged 15.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 46.1% from the field and 39.1% from behind the three-point line during his 21 games for Charlotte.
While White will be a free-agent this summer, Jeff Peterson, Hornets President of Basketball Operations, said after the season that he was looking forward to seeing how White would look with the team over the course of a full season. Granted, plenty can happen between April and later this month when free-agency opens, but if White would like a change of scenery, the Nets may be the team that can provide that to him.
