Miles Russell entered the 2026 U.S. Open as a surprise participant. The 17-year-old qualified for the event a few weeks ago, and he stuck around for the weekend after making the cut on Friday.
By making the cut, Russell had to alter his Father’s Day plans since he would be playing the final round at Shinncock on Father’s Day Sunday. However, the teenager still set aside a moment for his dad, who was following Russell throughout the week on the course.
Russell surprised his dad by allowing him to caddy one hole, capping off a special week for the family. Here’s a look at the moment Russell and his dad shared on Sunday.

Miles Russell’s dad caddies at U.S. Open
As Miles Russell approached the 18th hole on Sunday to finish an impressive U.S. Open performance, he had a surprise for his dad in the crowd. Russell’s caddie, Ramon Bescansa, went up to Russell’s dad, Joe, in the gallery and asked him to caddie for his son on the final hole.
What came after was a special moment between a 17-year-old and his father, as Joe walked the 18th hole with his son.

Russell said that it was his idea and he only told a few people, including his mom, but wanted to surprise his dad for Father’s Day.
Just talked to Miles Russell for a bit about his dad caddying for him up 18. Miles said it was his idea and his dad didn’t know it was going to happen.
Steve Wheatcroft encouraged him to do it because he did the same at the U.S. Open once with his dad.

Russell ended the tournament at +7, and his best performance of the four days came in the final round when he shot even for the day. He produced a par in the final hole, but he will remember it more for the moment with his dad.

Who is Miles Russell’s dad?
Russell’s dad is Joe Russell, who introduced Miles to the game of golf when Miles was just two years-old. Miles competed in Augusta National Golf Club’s Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals in 2018, which is when Joe described how Miles came to love the game.
“I would be watching Golf Central and I started noticing he was right there with me,” Joe said. “I love golf but I never had to push him into it.”
