A rocky season may not necessarily deter the Boston Red Sox from making noise before this year’s MLB trade deadline.

The Red Sox fell to 29-43 after getting swept by the Toronto Blue Jays at home, so they may need a hot stretch to buy before Aug. 3. However, they could also pursue upgrades to improve their outlook beyond 2026.

Power has eluded a Boston lineup that has hit 61 home runs this season. Sports Illustrated’s Will Laws and Nick Selbe floated an interesting solution when naming the Red Sox among the best trade fits for Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman.

“Goodman has developed into a true run producer for Colorado, anchoring the middle of the lineup while providing solid enough defense behind the dish,” Laws and Selbe wrote. “Under team control for three more seasons beyond this one, the Rockies will place a high asking price on him, and it’s far from a sure thing he would get moved. With new leadership at the helm in the front office, though, nothing is off the table.”

Goodman broke out with a bang in 2025, batting .278 with 31 home runs. The Silver Slugger is well positioned to earn his second straight All-Star nod, belting 21 home runs with an .858 OPS this season.

His success also doesn’t look to be a product of calling Coors Field home. Goodman is batting .284/.340/.604 with 14 home runs in 38 games away from the hitter-friendly venue.

Goodman would give the Red Sox a much-needed right-handed slugger for the heart of their lineup. The 26-year-old can’t test free agency until after the 2029 season, so he’d offer long-term assistance even if he couldn’t spark a midseason turnaround.

The Red Sox can take a closer look at Goodman when they start a three-game series at Colorado on Monday.
