The Boston Red Sox traded Shane Drohan to the Milwaukee Brewers as part of a six-player deal in the offseason, and he has turned into a clear rotation piece.
Drohan made his MLB debut with the Brewers as a starter, but struggled. He was sent down and came back to become a member of the bullpen. He was used as a long reliever and thrived in that role. However, injuries in the Brewers’ rotation forced him back into a starting role. Since rejoining the rotation, he has proven he deserves to remain a member.
Drohan has looked good in his last four starts, and in his latest start, on Thursday, he went five innings, allowing just one run, despite not having his best stuff. He had a quality start against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, which is not easy to do.
The Brewers figure to get Brandon Woodruff and Logan Henderson back soon, and they will claim two of the rotation spots. That would make Jacob Misiorowski, Kyle Harrison, Woodruff and Henderson locks for the rotation. The final spot would come down to Robert Gasser, Drohan and Brandon Sproat.
The former Red Sox southpaw has proven he can be the fifth starter. Gasser has looked good as of late, and Sproat is still shaky, as he continues to develop. Dohan has a 3.40 ERA on the season and is getting good chase and swing and miss on his pitches. He has a 34.1% chase rate and a 28.5% whiff rate.
The Brewers have developed Drohan into a reliable pitcher, capable of pitching in their rotation. It will be interesting to see if he holds onto his spot when the team is healthy.
