You just never know what the New York Yankees are going to do at the trade deadline, and the same can be said for a lot of teams around Major League Baseball.

The reason is rather simple: the Yankees and other teams around the league have to decide whether to call up some of their top prospects.

Top prospects are definitely factors at the trade deadline, especially when we start to factor in how some of them could be traded. Right now, it doesn’t seem like the Yankees are going in that direction with George Lombard Jr., with one reporter, Robert Murray, going as far as to say that it’s even a possibility that he could be a late-season call-up.

“I know there’s a ton of guys across the spectrum of positions that are available, but I want to lean into catching relief pitching. Those are probably the two big areas where I think the Yankees would look. Maybe shortstop, although I think Lombard has picked it up enough that he could be a late-season call-up, maybe,” Murray said.

Lombard, being a late-season call-up, wouldn’t be that big of a surprise if Anthony Volpe continues to struggle.

However, as Murray touched on, there were some struggles outside Lombard over the past year or so. Fortunately, he’s picked things up, but that’s no guarantee the Yankees are okay with how he’s played elsewhere.
