What's next for Brendan Sorsby after departure from Texas Tech?

The Brendan Sorsby saga has finally concluded.

Sorsby was granted an injunction allowing him to play in 2026 despite admitting to placing more than $90,000 in sports bets. However, after the ruling sparked significant backlash against Sorsby and Texas Tech, he has opted to leave the program.

He and Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell announced his decision on Monday night in separate statements. Now, Sorsby plans to apply for the NFL supplemental draft ahead of next Monday’s deadline.

The NFL supplemental draft was most recently held in 2023 and allows teams to bid on available players with future draft picks. A player is available for the supplemental draft if they become eligible after that league year’s draft.

Sorsby would be the first player picked in the supplemental draft since the Cardinals took safety Jalon Thompson with a fifth-round pick in 2019.

According to CBS Sports’ Shehan Jeyarajah, Sorsby is withdrawing his lawsuit against the NCAA. That renders his injunction to play invalid and makes him ineligible to play college football once again. As a result, he’s now eligible for the NFL supplemental draft.

It remains to be seen whether Sorsby will actually be selected in a supplemental draft, which would likely be held later this summer. But with his college career effectively over, it’s his only real shot of playing football this fall.
