Congratulations To The NHL Champion Hurricanes & What A June This Has Been So Far

It’s been a fun June so far, with a crazy NBA Finals, the World Cup starting up, and Sunday night, the Carolina Hurricanes winning the Stanley Cup, 4-2 in Game 6.

The ‘Canes were not fooling around Sunday. The defense was dominant throughout, and Las Vegas was pretty thoroughly stifled. It was a richly deserved win.

It’s also good for another reason.

What happened in New York after the New York Knicks won the NBA Championship was an absolute disgrace. We could be wrong, and it’s still early in Raleigh as we write this, but the odds of a celebration getting out hand seem vanishingly small. We don’t think you’re going to see a riot here, and that’s a good contrast to what happened in New York on Saturday night. This is the worst we’ve seen, and it’s actually kind of cute.

On a different June note, it’s been fun to see the World Cup start to unfold, and not least of all to see the various fans spread out across the U.S.

The Tartan Brigade has thoroughly won over Boston. The Dutch had massive street celebrations in Kansas City and Dallas, and the people of Lawrence, Kansas, have had an unexpected love affair with the Algerian team.

Other fans have marveled at places like Wal-Mart and Buc-ee’s. One woman was stunned by a multi-choice drink machine, and barbecue seems to be everyone’s favorite American food. Ice in drinks, Big Gulps, and free refills have also impressed our guests.

And then there’s Freddy.

Freddy (@FreddyLA7 on X.com), started out just minding his own business and enjoying his trip, but his raves about various things, like a late-night trip to Waffle House, exploring a Bass Pro Shop, and how welcomed he feels in the U.S. quickly won him a devoted following.

And then he started to get really noticed, and then it got even crazier.

He was raving about listening to rising country star Ella Langley on his rented truck’s radio, and a radio station called him out and dedicated one of her songs to him, which he heard live. Then he got invited to a show and will have a chance to meet Langley in person this Thursday evening.

Former NFL star JJ Watt rented him and his friends a spectacular hotel suite in Houston.

Can you imagine? What an incredible run of warmth and good fortune, topped off by Germany’s 7-1 win opening win over Curaçao.

The way his visit is going, it seems almost inevitable that Germany will win it all.
