UFC Sacramento Preview
The UFC rolls into Sac-Town for the first time in years, tonight. The last time they were here they hung their card on Germaine de Randamie. I think it’s fair to say they’ve come with a better main event this time around with ‘Fluffy’ vs. ‘RoboCop’. Despite that fun main event, though, the rest of the card leaves much to be desired.
This is Hernandez’s first fight since he was stopped by Sean Strickland. Had that not happened, Hernandez would have likely fought for the title. Rodrigues is on a three fight winning streak and just KO’d Brunno Ferreira. Both these guys have lots of wins and finishes in the division. But it also feels like they’ll need more than a win in Sacramento to get back into the 185 lbs. title picture.
It’s not the co-main, but the second most interesting fight on the card is Reinier de Ridder vs. Roman Dolidze, also in the Middleweight division. Both these guys are miles away from title contention, but they are well-known names at least. De Ridder is coming off losses to Caio Borralho and Brendan Allen. Dolidze is coming off a loss to our headliner, Hernandez.
Rounding out the main card tonight is Serghei Spivac vs. Vitor Petrino, MarQuel Mederos vs. Mason Jones, Carli Judice vs. Jeisla Chaves and Anthony Wint vs. Terrance Chatman. Jones already had a Fight of the Year candidate, against Axel Sola, earlier this year. Judice and Chaves might also put on a fun brawl. Wint is a super prospect, and former NFL player, who has been fed a total newcomer.
The featured ‘Prelim’ is Jamall Emmers vs. Lerryan Douglas. Douglas set tongues wagging with his blistering debut KO over Julian Erosa. The ‘Prelims’ also boast Chris Padilla vs. Nasrat Haqparast and Kennedy Nzechukwu vs. Shamil Gaziev.

UFC SACRAMENTO PLAY-BY-PLAY UPDATES
Main Card
Roman Dolidze vs. Reinier de Ridder
Round 1: De Ridder comes out aggressive. He chases Dolidze and Dolidze goes down due to a slip or possibly pulling guard. Dolidze tries to make the best of it by rolling for a leg lock. De Ridder manages to stay safe and get on top of Dolidze and drop some punches and elbows. Dolidze is a little stuck. He tries to explode out, but ends up losing the leg and de Ridder gets a better position to land ground and pound. He hammers away at the side of Dolidze’s head and it’s close to being stopped. Dolidze is just covering up. He eventually rolls to get out of trouble. De Ridder is still on top, though. De Ridder gets side control and passes to full mount, with ease. De Ridder lands more hard shots. Dolidze turns over and turtles up. De Ridder looks at the referee, asking why he’s not stopping. A few dozen more punches and the finish finally comes.

MarQuel Mederos vs. Mason Jones
Round 1: Mederos lands a good one-two and then a leg kick that puts Jones off balance. He then lands a jab. His hand speed seems to be faster than Jones. He’s also being very busy with low kicks. Jones takes time to load up and swing his, but Mederos is popping out three or four kicks in the time Jones takes to throw one. Jones tries to slow things down with a clinch, but Mederos gets out of it quickly. Jones storms forwards throwing a ton of punches. He catches Mederos and causes a little damage. Jones is wearing some damage, too, but he’s the one going forwards. Mederos gets the momentum back, though, landing more good shots. Out of nowhere, Jones kicks Mederos’ leg out from under him and gets on top. Mederos hits a sweep, though, and lands on top! Lots of action in that round, but Mederos landed the cleaner shots.
Mederos 10-9
Round 2: Jones wobbles Mederos early. He’s used to this kind of fight. Is Mederos? Mederos looks a lot slower here. Jones is just plodding forwards throwing bombs. He lands some nasty looking knees in the clinch. He then walks into a big elbow from Mederos. Jones is in survival mode. He’s standing and swaying and Mederos keeps tagging him brutal short elbows. Jones almost goes down, but somehow stays up, Mederos rocks him again with punches and the referee saves him!

Carli Judice vs. Jeisla Chaves
Round 1: Judice takes the center and comes forwards stalking Chaves down with shots to the body. Chaves throws some low kicks, but is forced to back up. Judice keeps up the pressure and throws a nice one-two upstairs. She moves down to the body again, though. And she sits Chaves down with a front kick right to the liver. Judice follows up with punches and that’s a wrap!

Anthony Wint vs. Terrance Chatman
Round 1: Wint looks patient early on. He and Chatman circle a lot and don’t commit to much in the way of striking. Wint then level changes and gets a single leg. Chatman attacks a kimura from the bottom and it looks good. That succeeds in taking away Wint’s offense, if nothing else. Chatman lets the kimura go, maybe because of getting hit in the back of the head. Now loose, Wint puts on an arm triangle and manages to pass over to the side. Chatman tries to defend, but then just falls asleep.

Jamall Emmers vs. Lerryan Douglas: Jamall Emmers upet Lerryan Douglas after hitting him with a crushing punch right to the orbital. Douglas went down and covered up immediately, suggesting that punch might have caused some serious damage. Douglas looked pretty good up to that point, but that punch takes away his win streak and a lot of the aura he was bringing into this bout.

Shamil Gaziev vs. Kennedy Nzechukwu: Nzechukwu elected to fight with his hands down. And that didn’t go well. Gaziev landed a straight right on him that sent Nzechukwu toppling over like a fallen tree.

Nasrat Haqparast vs. Chris Padilla: This was the first dull fight of the night, up until the finish. It was a pretty stale kickboxing bout for most of it, with Padilla using leg kicks to totally stifle Haqparast. In the third round Padilla dropped Haqparast with a punch and then tried to drill a hole in his head with 12-6 elbows. Haqparast managed to get up, but with time expiring Padilla locked up a standing arm triangle. He slammed Haqparast down with that and put him to sleep right on the buzzer!

Marcio Barbosa vs. Ryan Kuse: Barbosa did what was expected of him in this match. His power was far too much for the newcomer to handle. Barbosa didn’t land much that was clean in this fight, but his strafing shots were hard enough to wobble and eventually take Kuse out.

Gauge Young vs. Stan Dorsainvil: Dorsainvil a raw talent, but there’s a lot of talent there. He really threw himself into this fight with Young. Young had more technical skill than Dorsainvil and that was most notable in the first round, where he hurt Dosainvil and managed to complete a takedown. Dorsainvil was able to turn the tables in the second round, though, with all his activity and fearlessness. He tagged Young a number of times and the damage started to cancel out the skill gap. Dorsainvil had more energy in the third round and landed some big shots in the clinch and a takedown in the final minute to secure the decision (on my scorecard). Dorsainvil also showed off a lot of personality in the fight and looked like someone we’re going to enjoy seeing over the next few years.

Wes Schultz vs. Jackson McVey: Schultz threw some sloppy striking out early and almost lucked out by dragging McVey down and locking on a guillotine. McVey patiently worked his way out of that. Then, on the feet, McVey was able to show he is the far superior striker. He wore down Schultz with his jab and then put him down with a huge step in knee to the body.

Shanelle Dyer vs. Elise Reed: Dyer looked like a buzzsaw in this one. She took the slower, yet more experienced, Reed apart with her Muay Thai. In the second round she caused a big cut on the site of Reed’s head. In the third Reed really poured it on. She upped the intensity and Reed was practically begging for it to be stopped. Dyer finishes the fight landing 116 sig. strikes versus Reed’s 42.
