Things are suddenly looking much, much worse for the New York Giants. After an exciting Week 1 win over the Dallas Cowboys, there was a ton of excitement in the air. It seemed like after a long, long time, the Giants were fun to watch again. Perhaps a Wild Card berth was in the cards for this team this year.
Unfortunately, their hopes were brutally dashed in Week 2 against one of the Super Bowl favorites in the Los Angeles Rams. To make matters worse, New York is likely to lose one of their star players for a long time. Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart sustained a brutal knee injury early in the first quarter, and this injury could force him to miss the rest of the year.
The Giants still have a roster that could fight for a Wild Card spot. With that in mind, let’s look at the potential players they can trade for to salvage their campaign.

Mac Jones, San Francisco 49ers
Let’s start with a player who many thought would earn a new contract after making a few solid spot starts last season. It’s easy to forget now, but there was a time last season when there were conversations about Mac Jones potentially starting for the 49ers full-time. While these conversations were mostly ridiculous, the basis behind this movement was Jones’ ability to lead the 49ers in Brock Purdy’s absence last season.
Jones played in 11 games last season, completing 69.5% of his nearly 300 pass attempts for 2,151 yards. He threw for 13 touchdowns to just six interceptions on the year. Jones proved to be a capable game manager for the 49ers, which makes him a potential good pickup for the Giants at this point.
Jones remained with the 49ers this season, even though many projected him to pick up a potential starter for a QB-needy team this season. That being said, Jones’ luster as a spot starter is still there. The Giants don’t have as many weapons as the 49ers have, but they do have two great weapons in Malik Nabers and Cam Skattebo that Jones could rely on.
Kirk Cousins, Las Vegas Raiders
Let’s move on from a backup who should be starting now to a quarterback who’s starting now, but is expected to move to the bench soon. The Las Vegas Raiders signed Cousins this season with the expectation that he’ll be mentoring Fernando Mendoza this year. While Las Vegas has said that they don’t expect Mendoza to start this year, it’s common knowledge around the league that the first overall pick’s time is coming soon.
In the meantime, Cousins is starting for the Raiders… and he’s doing a damn good job as the starter. Through two games, Cousins has thrown six touchdowns, completed 67.8% of his 59 passes for 413 yards, and has led Las Vegas to an improbable 2-0 record to start the year. Cousins has his faults (three interceptions on the day), but he’s shown to be a productive quarterback even with limited weapons around him.
It’s in the best interest of the Raiders to keep Mendoza on the bench while Cousins is starting. The Giants shouldn’t care about that. Las Vegas will likely part with Cousins for the right price. If the trade value isn’t too high, New York needs to consider trading for the veteran quarterback.
